Partnach Gorge

Partnach Gorge near Garmisch-Partenkirchen is one of Bavaria’s most fascinating natural monuments, and you understand why the moment you step onto the first narrow walkway. Over thousands of years, the Partnach mountain stream has carved its way into the rock here, and in places the walls rise almost vertically to 80 metres above the water.

Inside the gorge, things get loud fast — the roar of the water echoes back and forth between the rock faces. In some stretches the path leads through short tunnels, in others across walkways that leave barely any distance from the rushing stream below. Spray hangs damp in the air, light only falls in narrow strips from above, and you feel distinctly small inside a cut that nature has shaped over an almost unimaginable span of time.

As a photographer, Partnach Gorge is a place of constant contrast: hard, smooth rock against water that never stops moving, dark passages against sudden shafts of light. Few places so close to Munich offer such a dense sequence of images in such a short stretch of trail.

Anyone who has walked through the gorge once understands why it has drawn hikers and photographers alike for generations — a narrow, loud, and striking counterpoint to the open landscape around it.
