Reine, Lofoten

Reine is, for many, the most beautiful place in Norway - red rorbuer huts by the water, steep granite peaks rising behind them, and a fjord that doubles everything on a still day.

I knew the pictures of Reine before I ever went there, and still nothing quite prepared me for how immediate the scenery feels once you are standing in front of it. The red fishing huts perch on their stilts almost in the water, and behind them the peaks of Reinebringen and its neighbors shoot up almost vertically - no gentle hills, just raw rock that turns every photograph into a negotiation with the frame.

What stayed with me most was one still morning when the fjord lay flat as glass. The huts, the mountains, the clouds - all doubled in the water, barely a line between above and below. In moments like that, you understand why this one spot on the Lofoten Islands gets photographed so often and still never feels repetitive.

Reine is small, a handful of houses and a harbor, and yet it stays one of the places I think back to whenever Norway comes up.
