Unstad Beach

Unstad on the Lofoten Islands is an arctic surf spot north of the Arctic Circle - surfers in freezing water against a rugged mountain backdrop, a rough and unusual kind of beauty.

During our Lofoten trip we made a detour to Unstad, and the sight took me by surprise: a small, sheltered bay, mountains reaching almost down to the water behind it, and in the middle of it all, surfers in wetsuits paddling out into the North Atlantic. Not the image you would automatically pair with the Arctic Circle.

The light up there is something else - flat, soft, constantly shifting between clouds and brief windows of sun. When a surfer catches a wave, mountains in the background and the cold, dark sea underneath, the contrast grabs you instantly as a photographer - summer and the Arctic compressed into a single frame.

Unstad shows a different side of the Lofoten Islands, less about still fjords and more about motion, cold, and a stubborn kind of defiance against the conditions. That is exactly what makes the place stand out to me.
